How to choose the right size crown molding for your ceiling height and room size.
Choosing the right size crown molding to compliment your room or home can be a bit confusing considering all of the options that are available today. Putting design aside, It’s just as important to pick the right size so you don’t overwhelm or underwhelm the room. Go to big and the room and ceiling height will visibly shrink. Go to small and it may not add the pizzazz you’re looking for. A good rule of thumb is to use the four percent rule. Take four percent of your ceiling height and plan your Crown Molding Installation accordingly. Let’s go over a couple of results below:
If you have eight foot ceilings and you take 4% of your height (96 inches), you come up with 3.84 inches (rounding up to 4 inches). This gives the maximum size crown you’ll want to install in that room. However, if the room is small (10x10), you’ll want to consider using a smaller material. If the room is a great room with plenty of space, you can get away with using something a bit larger.
Now let’s say you have higher ceilings that measure fourteen feet (168 inches). This equates to 6.72 inches (rounding up to 7 inches) for your material size. The larger the room, the more you can experiment with the size. Say you have a large space and want to visually bring down the ceiling height. You have the ability to use something larger than 7 inches to achieve your goal. On the flip side, if you have a smaller space, you might want to go a bit smaller to keep the room height looking visually the same.
